At SXSW last week mtvU held its Woodie Awards, recognizing artists popular with the college audience. The College Radio Woodie Award was given to FM radio station WASU at Appalachian State University (Boone, North Carolina) based on results of online voting.

According to the WASU website, “MTV called to say out of all the college stations in the United States, the people have spoken and WASU is the winner. It has been a long and hard journey. Thanks to your sore fingers, telling your friends, coming out to clickathons and listening WASU is bringing home the Woodie after four years of trying. MTV Woodie Glory is in all our hands. Thank you for that.” The station put forth a big social media effort to get listeners to vote for the station online, including a click-a-thon event.

The contest began with an online nomination period and the finalists were eventually narrowed to the following ten college radio stations: ACRN (Ohio University, Athens, OH), KRFH (Humboldt State University, Humboldt, CA), WPTS (University of Pittsburgh) (top 25 in 2011), WASU (Appalachian State University, Boone, NC) (top 10 in 2011), WLOY (Loyola University Maryland, Baltimore, MD) (top 25 in 2011), WDPU (DePaul University, Chicago, IL), Rainy Dawg Radio (University of Washington, Seattle, WA), KSUA (University of Alaska Fairbanks), WVMW (Marywood University, Scranton, PA), and WAIH (SUNY-Potsdam, NY).
