Today is the first annual High School Radio Day and at least 30 high school radio stations are participating in this event designed to raise the profile of high school radio. I plan to tune in to some of my nearby stations in order to see if they have anything planned. Unfortunately, according to the latest list, only one high school radio station in California (Titan Radio in Sacramento) is an official participant.

The mastermind behind High School Radio Day is Pete Bowers, the Station Manager for WBFH in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. In addition to encouraging stations to participate in High School Radio Day, the organizers also worked to get a special resolution passed in the state of Michigan declaring May 16, 2012 “High School Radio Day.”

To get in the mood for High School Radio Day, here’s a link to my sole radio station field trip to a high school station. I journeyed to WGBK in Glenview, Illinois back in 2009 and was so inspired when I saw teenagers doing radio.

Jennifer: Thank you for your support of high school radio! The fact that you planned to listen to some local high school stations makes my day because that’s exactly why we created our “day”. We hope others did the same as you and gave high school radio a listen on that day and liked what they heard. I didn’t know about Radio Survivor until you ran a story about HSRD…now I’m a fan! Keep up the good work!
