College Radio Watch: WUMD Leaves FM, WUSB’s 40th Anniversary, and More News

On Monday I caught a bit of the final moments of WUMD over FM. The community-focused college radio station at University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth is moving to an online-only format after its FM license was sold to Rhode Island Public Radio. To mark the occasion, WUMD aired special programming and shared video from the studio as it counted down its remaining time on FM. It was definitely bittersweet to witness the occasion from afar on WUMD’s Facebook Live stream. Just before the switch over, various DJs and hosts said their FM farewells, which was very touching to watch. I challenge you to not break down in tears as they announce their final FM sign-off. Moments later, they transition to the online-only version of WUMD by opening with a Bob Marley track, heading into the future on an optimistic note.

I’ve been an intermittent participant in the Radio Survivor Podcast lately, but you can catch me chatting about recent college radio news on this week’s episode. Additionally, I share my most recent radio station tour of community radio station WPPM-LP in Philadelphia. I’ve got three more station tours in the pipeline, including one bona fide college radio station.
