My fellow Radio Survivor Jennifer alerted us to the fact that today is apparently National Radio Day. It was never declared as such by Congress or any other arm of government, and according to the sketchy details on the Holiday Insights website the day seems to have its orgins in the 1990s when radio professionals started talking about having their own holiday.
None of us at Radio Survivor had ever heard of it before, either, which is why we weren’t able to give you more advance warning. Nevertheless, Yahoo News recognizes National Radio Day, and the This Is NPR blog ran a piece about it last year, listing out several reasons why public radio is a medium worth celebrating.
Today is also Pony Express Day, which commemorates a communications medium that has not endured the years nearly as well as radio. So, for the rest of today let’s reflect on how great it is that broadcast radio has lasted more than a century. Turn on your radio and listen. Maybe even find a local station with a live host or DJ (a college, public or community station is good bet) and give them a quick call to let them know you’re listening and that you appreciate having radio today.
