Robin Hood Radio to Purchase License for Bard College Radio Station
Bard College has submitted paperwork to the FCC in order to assign the license for WLHV-FM to Tri-State Public Communications, which operates Robin Hood Radio in Connecticut (WHDD-AM and WHDD-FM). Robin Hood’s website bills it as “the smallest NPR station in the nation.” According to the asset purchase agreement, the purchase price is $17,000. Currently WLHV is simulcasting WHDD’s broadcast over its 88.1 FM signal in Annandale-On-Hudson, New York.
Bard College operates an online-only student radio station WXBC and had hoped to raise the needed funds in order to get on the air terrestrially with WLHV-FM (the license for which it had won following a 2007 filing window). According to the WLHV website, “WLHV is a non-commercial educational radio station dedicated to fostering a strong culture of experimentation and inquiry. WLHV aims to showcase the College’s offerings, as well as those of the surrounding communities, across a broad spectrum of music, performance, ideas, and issues to entertain and inform our listeners.” Despite these aspirations, WLHV wasn’t able to secure the funding needed to get on the air. An article in the Bard Free Press from April, 2012 states,
“The effort to construct an FM radio station on the campus of Bard College under the call letters ‘WLHV’ has come to a halt due to a failure to secure funding. This was announced on March 9 on the project’s website…Those involved sought to build a station to which students and community members alike could contribute, in addition to subscription to programming from the likes of NPR and Pacifica.”
Test broadcasts over WLHV began in October, with programming being streamed from Robin Hood Radio.
