At a ceremony which aired on Sunday, March 17th, KSUA 91.5 FM from University of Alaska, Fairbanks was awarded the 2013 mtvU College Radio Woodie award. After an initial nomination round, the most popular college radio stations (by online vote) were culled to 25 finalists. Additional online voting reduced the field to the final list of 10 college radio station contenders. KSUA edged out the competition by receiving the most votes of any station. The non-commercial student station first began broadcasting in 1993, although its predecessor station (with the same call letters) was a commercial station at 103.9FM from 1984 to 1993.
According to an article in the Alaska Dispatch, KSUA staffers attending South by Southwest were alerted that they had won the award in advance of the official Woodie Awards ceremony. The station placed third in the competition last year.
