Every year South by Southwest (SXSW) seems to get bigger and bigger, with a growing interactive conference, film festival, and long-time music event.
The music festival begins today and runs through Sunday, March 17th. For radio fans, some of the offerings include panel discussions, radio station-sponsored events (showcases, live remote performances, etc.), and radio-related meet-ups. Here’s a quick look at some of the radio panels, parties, and films happening this week. Stay tuned for another post about radio station showcases and live remotes.
A few radio events have already happened, including a session with radio veteran and podcast pioneer Adam Curry on Saturday, Sunday’s New Storytelling Panel with Canadian Broadcasters, Sunday night’s party hosted by the Department of Radio-Television-Film (RTF) at University of Texas, Austin, and Monday’s session Time to Re-Boot: What Next for Podcasting?
Tuesday, March 12:
11:00am: Brown Paper Tickets National “Make Radio Challenge” Launch Brunch. At this brunch and panel discussion, LPFM hopefuls will learn more about the upcoming application window (Gibson Guitar Showroom
3601 S Congress Ave, Suite G400, Austin, TX 78704).
1:45pm to 3:31pm: Downloaded. See a screening of this new documentary about Napster (Vimeo Theater, 201 Trinity Street). It will also show on Saturday, March 16 from 4:30PM – 6:16PM.
3:00 – 4:00pm: Reimagine Local Radio: Artists, Promoters, Venues, College Radio, Blogs. At this meet-up, one can learn about the new Avenue Live service. Launching this summer, it’s a content-sharing platform which purports to “reinvent local radio” (Austin Convention Center, Meet Up Pavilion EH 3/4, 500 East Cesar Chavez Street).
Wednesday, March 13:
5:00 to 6:00 pm: The Fight for Fair Fees in the Music Industry. Musicians, strategists, and representatives from labels and from Pandora discuss solutions to the current “royalty discrepancy” (Austin Convention Center, Room 11 AM, 500 East Cesar Chavez Street).
5:00 to 6:00pm: Navigating Washington – Policy and Music in 2013. Michael Bracy (Policy Directory at the Future of Music Coalition) moderates a panel discussion which will feature FCC Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel, Jacqueline Charlesworth from the US Copyright Office, National Endowment for the Arts’ Dan Lurie.
11:30pm to 1:11am: The Lords of Salem. In this new film (directed by Rob Zombie), a radio DJ in Salem, Massachusetts gets strange flashbacks after listening to a gifted record (Alamo Ritz 2, 320 East Sixth Street).
Thursday, March 14:
12:00 noon to 5:00pm: Avenue Live is Local. Avenue Live (a “new local radio ecosystem”) hosts an all-day party at Soho Lounge (217 E. Sixth Street) with music, DJs, and drinks.
12:30pm to 1:30pm: Adult Rock Music Meeting. Panelists from several music organizations and radio stations/shows (including WAPS-FM, KCMP The Current, Sirius FM The Spectrum, WXRT, Acoustic Cafe, and WXPN-FM), will assess unreleased music in front of a live audience (Austin Convention Center, Room 10AB, 500 East Cesar Chavez Street).
5:00 to 6:00pm: Still Hazy After All These Years: Performance Royalties and Terrestrial Radio. Panelists from SoundExchange, Billboard, and National Association of Broadcasters discuss performance royalties (Austin Convention Center, Room 12AB, 500 East Cesar Chavez Street).
Friday, March 15:
11:00 am to 12:00noon: Navigating the Waters of Radio to Your Benefit. Learn about the “social relevance of water” at this panel, featuring executives from Clear Channel, Warner Brothers, and Entercom (Austin Convention Center, Room 10AB, 500 East Cesar Chavez Street).
12:30-1:30pm: Radio Promotion for the New Millennium. This panel discussion will focus on the changing nature of radio (terrestrial and satellite) promotion (Austin Convention Center, Room 10AB, 500 East Cesar Chavez Street).
Saturday March 16:
3:30pm to 4:30pm: Digital Music Experience: Lean Back or Forward. Representatives from TuneIn, CBS, and Songza discuss the challenges of replicating the radio experience digitally (Austin Convention Center, Room 15, 500 East Cesar Chavez Street).
