Update (4/3/2014): KALW looking for new Academy Recruits. More information here about the ten month program . . .
NPR affiliate KALW in San Francisco has chosen eight out of sixty applicants for its Audio Academy: a ten month intensive radio journalism program that sounds like a lot of fun (and a lot of work). Here’s a bit from the station’s press release, sent to us this morning:
“The Academy will lead participants through weekly coursework comprehensively covering all aspects of radio journalism. KALW staff and other notable media producers will lead workshops on researching, reporting, interviewing, writing, voicing and sound design. Trainees will learn to produce the live daily call-in program Your Call. They will also work closely with reporters and editors to create original feature stories for broadcast on the award-winning nightly news and culture show Crosscurrents.”
KALW is running this school in partnership with the Association for Continuing Education, an Internet access training non-profit.
The KALW Audio Academy class of 2013-14 looks like a very interesting crew. Its ranks include David Boyer, author of the oral history Kings and Queens: Queers at the Prom; Jeremy Dalmas, producer and co-host of talk show Oakland Nights; Jasmin Maria López, founder of multimedia training program Project Luz; former Daily Californian writer/editor Liz Mak; TV producer Rhian Miller; Palestine Monitor Editor-in-Chief Charlotte Silver; Todd Whitney, fresh from an internship at NPR’s Tell Me More; and product design veteran Rachel Wong.
Year ago I took a radio news training intensive at KPFA in Berkeley and got a huge amount out of the experience. Congratulations to the Audio Academy class of 2013-14.
