Learn radio storytelling and production with Transom Online Workshops

Transom.org logoBurgeoning radio producers have the opportunity to learn critical skills online with the new Transom Online Workshop. Transom, which calls itself “a showcase and workshop for new public radio,” received support from the Knight Prototype Fund to create two paths for the Online Workshop, a free self-guided course and a fee-based instructor-led course.

Transom has been conducting in-person workshops on many aspects of aural storytelling and producing narrative non-fiction for over a decade. With the Online Workshop the organization’s educational expertise and experience is made available in what it calls “interwoven multimedia models of web-based courseware.” Learning topics include interviewing, field recording, editing and story-structure.

The first alpha test of the three-week prototype instructor-led workshop recently finished. The six-week instructor-led workshop begins November 6, led by Peabody Award-winning producer and Communications Professor Scott Carrier.

The self-guided workshop will open in 2014. Transom says it will be offered in the style of Massive Open Online Courses, or MOOCs.
