On this lazy Sunday afternoon I’m listening to some new podcasts that I want to pass along to Radio Survivor readers.
Random Tape
I read Los Angeles magazine article about Dave Weinberg’s podcast that shares found home-recorded cassettes acquired at thrift stores, rummage sales and flea markets. As a fan of found ephemera I dived right in to the program’s feed, listening to “Kenneth and Miriam ring in the New Year” in 1995.
But Weinberg also explores other connections to these kinds of recordings, including one dedicated to The Piano Van, which is exactly what you’d think it is.
Quit It
I have to thank my podcast co-host Jenny Benevento–who also helped compile our 2013 best podcasts list–for recommending this one to me. Host Brian Thompson talks to comedians and other funny people about “things they wish would just quit.” This could be something that the guest him- or herself would like to quit, or something that other people should quit, “Like comedian Paul F. Tompkins, who thinks people should quit leaving their gum all over the place.” I started with a recent “special episode” featuring former Best Show on WFMU host Tom Scharpling discussing selling out, who on an earlier episode from June 2013 presciently talked about quitting working for free.
Coverville
As I reported last week, this long-running podcast recently won a Podcast Award, which brought it my attention. I really enjoy interesting cover versions of popular songs, and have compiled many mix tapes, mix CDs and playlists of them over the years. Coverville producer Brian Ibbot way outdoes my efforts with his twice weekly programming now at episode number 1,011, ably demonstrating that podcasts don’t have to be all talk. His “Best Covers of 2013” is a great place to start.
