The Federal Communications Commission continues to fast and furiously authorize construction permits for Low Power FM radio stations. Paul, Jennifer, and I could probably write an LPFM story every thirty minutes or so about new #lpfm developments. Arts groups with interesting names seem to be doing well in this process. Here are just some of the organizations receiving construction go aheads via the FCC’s Broadcast Actions release for Tuesday.
San Francisco based non-profit Galaxy Cat has won a construction permit for Muir Beach to the north of that city. Galaxy Cat trains music and community news producers in and around Sausalito. The group’s application to the FCC pledges to work with regional non-profits like the Marine Mammal Center and the Headlands Center for the Arts to publicize their efforts on behalf of the environment and the Golden Gate cultural scene.
The FCC has also given the green light to Indianapolis based Big Car Media for a LPFM. Big Car, in its own words, “brings art to people and people to art, sparking creativity in lives to transform communities.” From the group’s application: “Adding a low-power FM radio station to its toolkit, Big Car will expand its reach and offerings to local citizens and groups who both contribute to and benefit from the power of community cooperation. Based within the unique Fountain Square neighborhood in downtown Indianapolis, where the organization originated, this radio station will have a built-in audience of active listeners who already know that Big Car means good things for everyone.”
Eureka, California based Access Humboldt now has LPFM approval. From the application: “Access Humboldt’s mission is ‘local voices through community media.’ We are an innovative, self-sustaining and trusted media resource for residents of Humboldt, County.”
Baton Rouge based City of Joy Inc. has received a permit. The ten year old non-profit is dedicated to “provide services for at risk youth and their families, prevention against crime, tobacco and substance abuse,” according to its application. Religious organizations with new permits include The Tabernacle Baptist Church of Wilson, North Carolina, Walla Walla Catholic Radio in Washington, and the St. Thomas More Catholic Student Center in Pullman, Washington.
FCC construction permits issued on Wednesday include Low Key Arts Incorporated, an art space and music venue located in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Music Only Makes Sense of Davis, California, Rusting Sprocket Art of Vancouver, Washington, Big Bear Theater of Big Bear Lake, California, Newark Community Radio of Newark, Delaware, the Center of the World Festival of Pine Mountain Club, California, 11:11, a Creative Collective of North Hollywood, California, and Media Watch of Santa Cruz, California.
Also ok’d to set up a LPFM: the Jackson Electric Cooperative of Edna, Texas. Jackson is a rural electric non-profit set up in 1939 to distribute power to residents of Jackson and Matagorda Counties, and parts of Calhoun, Lavaca, and Brazoria counties via a 2,300 mile long power line system.
Religious station permits: Gainesville Seventh-Day Adventist Church of Gainesville, Florida, Bangs Church of Christ of Bangs, Texas, and the Calvary Chapel Fellowship of Wichita, Kansas.
