LPFM Watch: Low-Power Radio Workshop at NFCB & More LPFM News

The assignment of LPFM construction permits creeps forward, with the total now at 1137 new stations approved. It still seems like the FCC is not yet dealing with frequencies where there are multiple applicants, known as MX groups (for mutually exclusive). However, applicants that filed amendments in order to no longer compete with others are being approved.

One such MX group was in Bend, Oregon, where Central Oregon Community College and Everlasting Gospel Broadcasting Corporation were competing for the same spot on the dial. As Jennifer reported last week, COCC received its permit after making a minor amendment for a new frequency. In so doing it made a deal with Everlasting Gospel which agreed to move to modify its application for an adjacent frequency. The latter group received its construction permit on March 28.

Intensive LPFM Workshop at NFCB Conference

New LPFM stations will have the opportunity to attend a full-day intensive workshop at the National Federation of Community Broadcasters conference this May. The “People Powering Your LPFM” workshop is led by station start-up specialist and Community Radio Goddess Donna DiBianco and Sabrina Roach, who helped coordinate applicants in Seattle as part of her work as a “doer” with Brown Paper Tickets.

From the workshop description:

“Learn from experienced community media people what it takes to get your LPFM station up and running and to set it up to thrive. Everything from A to Z will be included in this intensive specifically designed for LPFM aficionados.”

This is a great opportunity for new stations to learn from two of the most informed, experienced and enthusiastic people working in low-power radio. As well, there is much more to be gained from becoming an NFCB member, and to learn at the conference.
