A fair number of construction permits were issues in the last week, twenty-six, bringing the total up to 1,458.
Notable are two new stations in Los Angeles. Cinefamily and Society for the Activation of Social Space Through Art and Sound had been competing for 106.3 FM. However, Cinefamily successfully moved to 96.7 FM permitting both applicants to get construction permits.
These are both interesting groups, too. Cinefamily is a non-profit movie theater and cinema appreciation group focusing on “exceptional, distinctive, weird and wonderful films.” According to its application, Cinefamily plans to air some “public affairs programming pertaining to all aspects of the cinematic experience, including production, distribution and consumption of film, film criticism, interviews, and radio theatre.”
According to its website, The Society for the Activation of Social Space through Art and Sound “serves as a catalyst for the creation, presentation, and recognition of experimental art and sound practices.” As a fan of experimental and avant-garde musics, I’m pretty excited by the prospect of SASSAS having its own station. On its application the group told the FCC that it “wants to create an exciting radio station that will feature performances from the organization’s archives, and an array of discussions and talk-based programs that reflect on the ongoing development of the experimental arts and culture happening in Los Angeles and around the world.”
Another public library received a low-power FM construction permit, The Charleston County Public Library, in Charleston, SC. This station will “connect the greater Charleston Peninsular community with educational, cultural, and entertainment resources and events, both those sponsored by the library system and those sponsored by community organizations.”
Three school groups or districts also received low-power FM approvals: Grace Christian Academy in Bryson City, NC; Regional School Unit RSU 21 in Kennebunk, ME; and New Buffalo Area Schools in New Buffalo, MI.
