Congratulations to Borderlands Community Media, which has won a construction permit for a Low Power FM station in Bisbee, Arizona. One of the most interesting things about Borderlands application is that the non-profit published its proposed schedule. An interesting mix of public, alternative, and local bilingual programming in the lineup, including the Moth Radio Hour, local music with Noticiero Latino updates, BBC, Alternative Radio, plus a Spanish syndicated call-in show. It’s almost everything that’s around, stacked between layers of local content.
Bisbee, AZ (population around 5,500) is not too dissimilar to Madrid, New Mexico, where yet another LPFM is being built. It’s got a long, hallowed Indian-wars, mining town history, followed by some lonely years, followed by rediscovery by various art and counter-culture types, who co-exist with the area’s Hispanic and Native American residents (Bisbee dwells in Cochise County).More station goals from the application:
The stated areas of programming focus include: working to develop programming with residents of Bisbee and Naco, Arizona that is bilingual (Spanish and English); organizing a youth media project that focuses on the stated educational goals of the Bisbee and Naco school districts (as both systems are rural, public education institutions whose population is predominately Hispanic with more than 50% of the students living below the poverty line); and launching a media partnership with local agencies to develop programming focusing on community health and wellness.
