As of Monday evening, 13 staffers at WSOU, the student-run radio station of Seton Hall University, have sequestered themselves in their East Orange, New Jersey HQ to cover the Great East Coast Blizzard of 2015.
WSOU 89.5 FM will be “live and local throughout the storm,” its station manager Erica Szczepaniak promised in a press release we’ve received. “Working in shifts, the team will provide listeners regular newscasts, weather reports, details on power outages and other critical information. The station will, of course, also be playing its unique mix of metal, hardcore, punk, and other loud rock genres.”
Driving bans are in effect across New Jersey, New York, and Connecticut. Many flights have been cancelled. Two feet of snow may fall before the blizzard ends.
Most of WSOU’s fans count on its heavy metal format. But they also tune in for traffic and public safety updates. “We know that WSOU is a constant companion and a lifeline to those who have to work when the weather is at its worst, especially during the overnight hours,” adds program director Steven Varsanyi. “WSOU will be here for them.”
