CDs at college radio station WGMU

College Radio Watch: Is October College Radio Month?

I hope that you took the opportunity to celebrate College Radio Day last Friday. Did you check out a new station? Do something special at your own station? We’d love to hear your stories, so please feel free to comment on this post.

This week’s edition of College Radio Watch will be brief, with just a few reminders about recent college radio coverage on Radio Survivor. It’s worth pointing out that several college radio events are on the horizon over the next few weeks and we preview them on the Radio Survivor Podcast episodes mentioned below. Next week I will do a lengthier post with some of the latest college radio news.

Centenary College Plans to Sell License for its Public Radio Station WNTI

Probably the most buzzed about college radio news this week is word that Centenary College plans to sell the license for its public/community radio station WNTI. While we await word on who the purchaser might be, the station is running automated music and syndicated programming. The school announced that an online station will remain on campus, which will welcome both students and community DJs. Supporters of WNTI have launched a petition and also spearheaded a “memorial” today, inviting fans to leave flowers and letters to the college president outside the station. Read more in my piece from Wednesday.

Public Radio Programming on WAMH + Previewing CMJ’s College Day and College Day on Tour

On Radio Survivor Podcast #17, I chat with David DeKeyser, General Manager of CMJ’s College Radio Network to learn more about plans for College Day during CMJ’s Music Marathon, which is coming up on Wednesday, October 14 in New York City. Additionally, he gives me a preview of what to expect at CMJ’s first regional event, College Day on Tour, taking place in Portland, Oregon on November 7. I also talk about some of the recent changes at WAMH at Amherst College, which is now airing public radio content during a portion of the station’s broadcast day. My College Radio Watch feature on the podcast begins at around the 34 minute mark.

Previewing CBI’s Student Electronic Media Convention + Update on Fight over KUSF-FM

Another college radio event on the horizon is College Broadcasters Inc. (CBI)’s National Student Electronic Media Convention, which is happening in Minneapolis from October 22 to 24. On Radio Survivor Podcast #18, I give a preview of that event and also provide an update on the latest news regarding the sale of former college radio station KUSF-FM.

We cover the culture of college radio every Friday in our College Radio Survivor feature. If you have college radio news to share, please drop us a note at EDITORS at RADIOSURVIVOR dot COM.
