I’m immersed in the College Broadcasters Inc. (CBI) conference today and hope that some of you caught my two presentations yesterday on college radio history and culture. As I prepared for these presentations, I spent some time reflecting back on the more than 90 radio station visits that I’ve embarked on since 2008. Looking through my photos, I’ve been reminiscing about some of the sights and sounds from the amazing collection of stations that I’ve been to. One of those stations, Barnard College’s WBAR (which was my 13th field trip back in 2009), was the subject of a nice piece in the Columbia Spectator.
I was pleased to read that WBAR is the largest club at Barnard:
Seven years ago, WBAR was struggling to fill in time slots; now it is the largest club at Barnard, and getting a DJ position is highly competitive because of its growing popularity. The 100-plus WBAR DJs are comprised of students from all of Columbia’s affiliated schools—including Teachers College and the Jewish Theological Seminary—with no previous experience necessary.”
I’m always impressed by small schools with large station staffs, as it shows the enduring power of student radio.
Speaking of my station visits, on Monday I posted my most recent college radio station tour: WVAU at American University in Washington, D.C. It’s my final post from my spring trip to D.C. and my 90th radio station field trip report since 2008. I was very thankful that the WVAU staff welcomed me on a holiday weekend!
