Wow. What a week. It’s only September 2 and the new school year is already packed with college radio news. Yesterday I wrote about the big questions surrounding the future of CMJ and its annual Music Marathon, which should be of particular interest to college radio stations who report charts to the publication and who attend its confab/festival in New York every fall.
I also did a piece chronicling the new Princeton Review “Best College Radio Stations” list, which was just released. Even though I critique the methodology and the title of the list (it’s not really a “best” list), kudos to the schools and radio stations who are able to get some added attention out of it. I even discovered a few new radio stations while researching the schools that made the list.
Being a fan of college radio history, I was excited to read Fred Krock’s latest piece in his series for us about San Francisco Bay Area radio in the 1950s. For part three, he delves into college radio at Stanford University. He’s got some great anecdotes from the era and it’s interesting to hear about some of the semi-scandalous programming that was aired on KZSU at the time.
Finally, the Radio Survivor Podcast this week has some great content about fundraising courtesy of Becky Meiers from community radio station KBOO. I also share another college radio station tour, this time from KCSU at Colorado State University in Ft. Collins. As an added bonus, you can hear some tidbits from the interview that my 10-year-old daughter conducted in the KCSU studio.
