In the past week, I’ve been amazed by the amount of Christmas music that is emanating from sound systems in the local businesses that I’ve been frequenting. Coffee shops, medical offices, shopping malls, and clothing stores have been some of the places where I’ve heard familiar holiday tunes. College radio is a mixed bag, with some stations embracing the winter holiday spirit and others shying away from standard Christmas audio fare.
Probably my favorite radio tradition during the holidays is classic radio drama. Some stations air radio dramas this time of year and there are also some groups that regularly do live radio plays. If you are in Seattle, you can attend a live radio broadcast of “A Christmas Carol” on Friday, December 9th. Seattle Radio Theatre and KIRO will present the 1930s radio drama, complete with sound effects and live music at Town Hall Seattle. On the East Coast, Howard Community College in Columbia, Maryland will also be presenting a live radio play version of “A Christmas Carol” starting on Thursday, December 8th.
And, in Wisconsin, WGTD Radio Theater at Gateway Technical College will be presenting “Another Christmas Variety Show” as a live radio show in person and over public radio station WGTD 91.1 FM on December 10 at Lake Lawn Resort in Delavan, Wisconsin. Walworth County Gazette reports that, “The fourth annual program will feature holiday skits with radio actors portraying Hollywood legends such as Dean Martin, Phyllis Diller, Jerry Lewis and Bette Davis…”
