College Radio Watch: UWave Radio Loses LPFM, Touring WHIP, and More News

I was saddened to hear that college radio station UWave Radio will not be moving to low power FM (LPFM). Although it had been awarded a new LPFM construction permit, the administration of University of Washington, Bothell changed its mind and told students that it would be turning the permit back to the FCC. As of April 7, the permit had been cancelled and the call sign KUWU-LP for 104.9 FM in Bothell had been deleted.

In a letter to the FCC dated April 5, 2017, University of Washington, Bothell’s Chancellor Bjong Wolf Yeigh writes, “The University of Washington Bothell, by its undersigned officer, hereby surrenders and requests cancellation of the above-referenced original construction permit for new low power FM radio station KUWU-LP at Bothell, Washington…”

Earlier this year, I wrote about students’ disappointment that the university had backed off on supporting the new radio station. At the time, they had hoped that a meeting with the chancellor would convince him to support their LPFM efforts. Sadly, that was not the case.

Touring WHIP Radio at Temple

I’m still catching up on my radio station tour reports and hope you saw my piece about WHIP Radio at Temple University in Philadelphia. I was super impressed by its leaders and by the breadth of its programming.
