College Radio Watch: TV as the New College Radio and More News

Are TV shows the new college radio? An article on Interlochen, The Rewiring of Our Relationship to Music, dissects music discovery and invokes college radio in a few places. The author first references student radio DJs as understanding the importance of both old and new music, writing, “College-radio DJs, a guild whose influence is disappearing, knew too.” A second nod arrives in the form of a quote from Light in the Attic’s Matt Sullivan. According to the piece, “His label, he explained, had hired one person to work on licensing ten years ago — now it has three. ‘There are more original TV shows,’ he said, ‘and a lot of supervisors now — this has been building for the last 15 or 20 years — come from a college radio or record-store background. Master of None, or Fargo, these shows have phenomenal music. They’re almost the new form of college radio, in terms of a discovery tool.'”

On the flip side, Americana musician Ray Wylie Hubbard cites college radio as one of the ways that he continues to grow his audience of fans. He tells the Red and Black, “I suppose I keep at it. It’s kind of one of those things, I guess because of satellite radio, and local stations like NPR and public radio stations, and college radio stations. And of course the web, with Facebook and Twitter and social media, all that. People are finding me because I’m not on mainstream radio. I think people are searching out for something that’s not so homogenized.”

What do you think, is college radio still a music discovery tool?
