College Radio Watch: Stereotyping Sound, Podcast Honors Women and More News

Yesterday was International Women’s Day and in light of that, this week’s Radio Survivor Podcast raises important issues about how we listen: not only to women, but also to people who come from different backgrounds from our own. Our guest, Jennifer Stoever, is the editor-in-chief of the Sounding Out! blog, which focuses on sound studies and making that field more accessible. She also has some college radio connections, with some of her work heard on WHRW at Binghamton University. Often academic work can be seen as arcane and inaccessible, so it’s been refreshing to see Sounding Out showcasing work by a variety of folks interested in how sound and listening are understood in our culture.

Sounding Out also produces a podcast and one recent episode nicely portrays some of the intersections between sound and power, sharing anecdotes about how sound is used to make women and people of color feel unwelcome (The Sonic Landscape of Unwelcome). Listening to that episode and doing this week’s podcast gave me some great perspective on why I need to pay more attention to how I listen and if I am “stereotyping sound.”
