College Radio Watch: GRC Portland and CBI Seattle Proposals Due Soon and More News

It’s transition time at many college radio stations, as volunteers and staff members from the academic year graduate and pass the torch to new leadership. With these shifts, summer can be a good time for station projects and for making plans for the fall. A couple of fall radio conferences in the Pacific Northwest should be on the radar of college radio participants, particularly if stations are thinking of submitting proposals for panels or workshops. The Grassroots Radio Conference has a proposal deadline of June 30 for its October 5-7 event being hosted by KBOO in Portland. I’d like to encourage college radio stations to submit ideas, as it would be great to have some programming geared towards college radio at that event.

Also, College Broadcasters Inc. is seeking proposals for its National Student Electronic Media Convention in Seattle (October 25-27). The deadline for those submissions is August 1st. I’ll be brewing on some ideas for both events and have already found some inspiration in the conference guide for the recently held National Campus/Community Radio Conference (NCRC37) in New Brunswick, Canada. The welcome message reads in part,

“Our theme this year is Neighbourhood. No matter what kind of radio we do, we do it in the context of people in a place, with shared and conflicting ideas, values and goals. We come together sometimes by chance, by circumstance, by reference from other people or places or things. We have an identity together, often arising out of the motley collection who randomly shares space. But we can open our awareness to recognize the raw circumstance, and choose to enhance it, to create a more cohesive whole out of disparate parts, to find and make common ground.”

It’s a lovely way to think about the college radio community.
