While planning my East Coast summer vacation, I fantasized about visiting numerous college radio stations in New York and Massachusetts, as I dreamed off ticking off more stops on my 140 station+ tour series. It’s always a balancing act, as my family members aren’t nearly as obsessed with sticker-covered cabinets, vinyl collections, and vintage audio gear as I am. Luckily, I was able to sneak away one afternoon to visit Vassar’s college radio station WVKR, which will be the subject of a field trip post soon. Although I made last-minute attempts to see another station, all that I was able to see was the station logo-emblazoned studio window.
My daughter and husband did tag along willingly to see one of the more interesting community radio stations that I’ve ever toured: Wave Farm’s WGXC. Having been aware of Wave Farm’s fascinating work, particularly in transmission arts, I was thrilled to finally see its operation in person. That’s the subject of the most recent episode of the Radio Survivor podcast, which coincidentally airs on WGXC! I’ll have my station tour posts for WGXC up soon.
Hopefully you saw my colleague Paul’s great tips on promoting one’s radio show. He specifically calls out college radio, saying, “It is long past time when a community or college radio DJ or programmer can simply show up to do their show and expect to have an audience. Everyone who has a radio show bears the responsibility to build an audience for that show, and their station.” His piece has some specific advice on how to spread the word about one’s show and station.
