Finalists for the 9th annual Podcast Awards are out. Like previous years, the slate of nominees covers a wide variety of programs across 22 categories, mostly dominated by pure-play podcasts that are not also broadcast radio shows. Anyone can vote for the winners, and voting is open until November 15. The awards are given out at New Media Expo in Las Vegas on January 5, 2014.

Stitcher recently announced the milestone of 12 million downloads of its podcast listening app, becoming the most popular podcast app on Android, and the second most popular on iOS after Apple’s own apps. The company reports that it has 20,000 shows now available on its platform, and that the top 100 programs have seen, on average, a 15x increase in audience over the past two years.

The “Cellar Dwellers” program at the University of Southern Indiana’s WSWI won best podcast at this year’s National Student Electronic Media Convention, sponsored by College Broadcasters Inc. It’s interesting to see that WSWI is an AM station that now also has a an FM presence on an HD2 channel. You can listen to the winning episode here.
