This week we covered quite a bit of college radio news, including word that Indiana University Kokomo may be shuttering its streaming (and soon to be LPFM) college radio station Radio Free Kokomo. We hope to have more updates about the situation there soon, but in the meantime, the station is asking for letters of support to be sent to the school’s administration.
Also this week, I added another college radio field trip report to my growing collection, writing about my trip to see University of Washington, Bothell’s streaming college radio station (and imminent LPFM) UWave Radio. Finally, with the East Coast blizzard looming, we also reported on Seton Hall University station WSOU’s plans for storm coverage alongside its metal music format.
New LPFM coming to East Texas Baptist University
East Texas Baptist University in Marshall, Texas was awarded a construction permit for a new low power FM (LPFM) radio station this week. According to its application, the station plans to air jazz programming, “music education programs like HISTORY OF JAZZ,” as well as local news and public affairs shows. The application also mentions plans for “informational shows and news from the faculty of East Texas Baptist University.” The school currently a student-run Internet radio station, Level 1209. According to student publication the Compass, Level 1209 is making plans for its future LPFM and recently selected its call letters of choice: KXBU.
Revamped Studios for Radio 1190 at University of Colorado, Boulder
The Colorado Daily reports on changes happening at Radio 1190, which is in the midst of a big project to upgrade its facilities. According to the article, the station is “turning down the dirty dorm feel and cranking up its studio space” with a studio renovation and tower upgrades.
Bates College Station WRBC Hosts All-Night Trivia Night on Saturday, January 30th
The Bates Student shares news that tomorrow night, Bates College radio station WRBC 91.5 FM in Lewiston, Maine will hold its annual call-in “All Night Trivia Night” from 8pm until 8am. According to the article, “for this all-night event, students compete as teams, calling into the station to guess the names of songs and artists, in addition to performing a physical challenge every hour. Many of the call-in questions are open to interpretation—points are awarded for creativity.”
Day of Noise Coming to KZSU Stanford on February 7th
KZSU 90.1 FM at Stanford University will once again present its annual Day of Noise. The station’s 13th Day of Noise is “a live 24-hour series of 24+ performances from Bay Area experimental artists in a celebration of sounds strange and beautiful,” according to a KZSU press release. The live broadcast will also feature live video and will include performances by Big City Orchestra, Henry Plotnick, Julia Mazawa & Tom Djil, Li Xi, John Bischoff, and many others beginning at midnight on February 7th.
University of Washington’s Student-Run Chinese Language Radio Station
I was interested to see an article on the KUOW website about HUA Voice at University of Washington. The Chinese language student-run radio Internet radio station began its life as a twice weekly programming block on college radio station Rainy Dawg Radio (read about my recent visit to Rainy Dawg) in 2014 and has subsequently spun off into its own station, with separate studios on campus.
WIUX Up for 13 Awards from IBS
Indiana University’s low power FM (LPFM) college radio station WIUX-LP is competing for 13 awards at the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) convention. According to Indiana Daily Student, one of the awards is for “innovative programming” on B-side Radio, which is the station’s non-FCC regulated Internet-only stream, allowing it to “push the boundaries of what a radio station can be.”

Student Radio Station Griff FM to Broadcast in Dublin, Ireland until February 1st
When I visited Ireland a few years back, I was intrigued by the temporary radio licenses held by many student radio stations. Often stations will broadcast terrestrially for just a few weeks a year, which is the case at Griff FM at Griffith College in Dublin. Having just launched this year’s 9-day broadcast, programming will run through February 1st.
CJLO Told That it Can’t Expand Broadcasts with FM Transmitter
Canadian Campus-Community radio station CJLO-AM had applied for permission to add an FM transmitter at Concordia University in Montreal in order to expand its coverage. According to the Montreal Gazette, The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) denied the station’s request, arguing that, “because 107.9 was one of the last remaining frequencies available for use in Montreal, an FM retransmitter ‘does not represent an appropriate use of spectrum.'”
Charles Parker Prize Accepting Entries for its UK-Based Student Radio Awards
Radio students in the United Kingdom are invited to submit entries for the annual Charles Parker Prize for Best Student Radio Feature. According to the submission guidelines, “The prize was introduced in 2005 and is open to any student studying radio production at Further or Higher Education establishments throughout the United Kingdom. Entries must be submitted on Audio CD accompanied by a completed Entry Form by Monday 2 March 2015.”
