College Radio Watch: Happy 80th Anniversary to Carrier Current College Radio and More News

Thanks to Matthew Lasar for pointing out that this year marks the 80th anniversary of carrier current broadcasting on college campuses. According to Louis Bloch’s 1980 tome, Gas Pipe Networks, the first carrier current college radio station launched at Brown University in 1936. The technology caught on and by the late 1970s there were purportedly more than 600 carrier current radio stations in the United States. In next week’s podcast I’ll share more about the history of carrier current, so be sure to tune in for that. On this week’s podcast I dig a bit more into my tour of WCUA at Catholic University in Washington, D.C.

Also this week, Foothill College radio station KFJC (where I volunteer and DJ) is doing another live remote broadcast from Europe (its second in a week!). On June 17, 18 and 19, KFJC is broadcasting live from the Surfer Joe Summer Festival in Livorno, Italy, airing performing from an international line-up of instrumental surf bands.

KWVA Marks Move from Bathroom to Basement with Monday Festivities

You might remember that last summer I visited college radio station KWVA at University of Oregon. At the time, I was told that the station would soon be moving to a remodeled space in their building. That time has come and KWVA is marking the occasion with some special events on Monday, June 20th. KWVA General Manager  Charlotte Nisser writes, “On Monday, June 20th KWVA will have a special live 4-hours on-air during which we celebrate our move… #bathroomtobasement. From 8am-9:30am on Monday, KWVA will be broadcasting a ‘GOODBYE OLD SPACE’ show from the current KWVA suite on the Mezzanine level of the Erb Memorial Union. We will then take 30 minutes of silence to move the heart of the station, from 9:30am-10am. From 10am-12pm, we will be broadcasting a ‘HELLO NEW CHAPTER OF BEAUTIFUL LIFE’ show from the new Suite 45 in the basement of the Erb Memorial Union. The 4 hour playlist is a collection of songs and comments from current and alumni staff and volunteers.”
