Is it really summer? Feels like a busy week for radio news. Hastings College radio station KFKX in Hastings, Nebraska left the air this week. When I tuned in to check it out yesterday, I saw the message, “off the air.” We also got word that some former KUSF-FM programmers may soon be back on terrestrial radio with a new low power FM (LPFM) station in San Francisco. The group, San Francisco Community Radio, is still in the running for a LPFM construction permit and may end up sharing a frequency. And, finally, check out this week’s Radio Survivor Podcast to hear more about my tour of Georgetown University’s college radio station WGTB.
60 Years Worth of Tapes Provide Source Material for CiTR Documentaries
I was excited to read about a project at University of British Columbia’s student radio station CiTR that has resulted in ten radio documentaries. According to The Ubyssey, “More than 890 reel-to-reel audio tapes from over 60 years of the Student Radio Society of UBC have been digitized over the past year, making a total of 406 hours of historic audio available to the public. These recordings include music programs, radio documentaries, campus and community news, and events broadcast on CYVR/CiTR and its affiliate stations from 1949 to the late ’90s.”
One of the resulting documentaries, CiTR’s DJ Sound Wars: Hip Hop Battles in the 90’s, provides a glimpse into DJ battles of the 1990s. Other documentaries in the series investigate grunge music, the queer rights movement in Vancouver, and more.
