Happy belated World Radio Day to my college radio friends. I celebrated by reading about radio, listening to radio, and doing radio. Pretty much a typical week for me. As my colleague Paul Riismandel noted in his post, this year’s World Radio Day had a sports theme.
Although I don’t write much about sports, it’s an integral part of many college radio stations and often provides some of the most highly listened-to content over a given station’s stream or terrestrial signal. Additionally, the opportunity to do sports play-by-play and color commentary can be the first step towards a career in sportscasting for many pro radio hopefuls.
Coincidentally, a few college radio sports stories came across my newsfeed over the past few weeks. Andy Stine writes in The Courier Express, “…the one thing I miss the most from my college days is the sports radio show I had on campus…It turned out to be the best extracurricular activity that I did in my college years…”
Other pieces cover students getting to hang with commercial broadcasters at the Superbowl’s radio row and a story about a long-time Villanova University sportscaster who got his start at the school’s college radio station WXVU (read my 2014 tour report). Read on for more college radio news.
