In a matter of hours the CMJ Music Marathon will get underway in New York City. Although it’s expanded from its college radio roots into a larger event with music showcases featuring around 1,000 bands, a film festival, artist-focused panels, and even gaming sessions this year; there is still a noticeable radio presence at the festival (as there was last year) throughout the week at both official and unofficial events.
Here’s a run-down of some of the radio-related events happening this week in and around New York City. Official CMJ events typically require that you have a CMJ Badge, so be sure to check in advance if you are not a badge-holder:
Tuesday, October 19:
12pm to 9pm: @EVR Streaming Showcase at East Village Radio, 19 1st Avenue, NYC. Live broadcast of performances, interviews, and DJ sets by Greatest Hits, White Arrows, The Riff Raff, Mon Khmer, Marit Larsen, Daily Bread, Xylos and Living in Agony.
4-6pm: College Radio Mixer at Le Poisson Rouge, 158 Bleeker Street, NYC (Open to people affiliated with college/non-commercial radio stations)
Wednesday, October 20:
10am to 5pm: Live broadcast and performances hosted by KEXP at the Ace Hotel Lobby, with performances by the DOM, Dean & Britta (play Galaxie 500), The Drums, Moby (DJ Set), and Holly Miranda (free and open to the public).
11am to 10pm: @EVR Streaming Showcase at East Village Radio, 19 1st Avenue, NYC. Live broadcast of performances, interviews, and DJ sets by Martina Topley-Bird, Sky Larkin, JD Samson, N.O.R.E., Shawn Chrystopher, Bazaar Royale, Rah Digga and Blu, of Blu & Exile.
Thursday, October 21:
9:30am-5:00pm: CMJ College Day at NYU’s Rosenthal Pavilion (includes panel discussions with college radio Music Directors, sessions on marketing for one’s college radio station, and the annual College Radio Awards )
10:00am-5:00pm: Live broadcast and performances hosted by KEXP at the Ace Hotel Lobby featuring Adam Haworth Stephens of Two Gallants, Revolver, Eli “Paperboy” Reed, and Bloodgroup (free and open to the public)
11am-12:15pm: “The Truth, and the Crossing Lines of Radio and A&R” (Panel discussion at NYU open to CMJ Badge Holders featuring Matt Pinfield and Leslie Fram from commercial station WRXP)
12:30-1:45pm: The “Free Play for Free Promotion” Free-For-All (Panel discussion at NYU on the Radio Performance Rights Act open to CMJ Badge Holders)
11pm to 10pm: @EVR Streaming Showcase at East Village Radio, 19 1st Avenue, NYC. Live broadcast of performances, interviews, and DJ sets by Lovetones, Nightmare and the Cat, Adam Haworth Stephens, Katy (La Sera) of Vivian Girls, PVT, Parallels, and Underworld.
2:00-3:15pm: “Policy Wheel of Justice” (Panel discussion at NYU about performance royalties, webcasting rates, payola and copyright reform.)
6pm: College Day Afterparty at Solas, 232 East 9th Street, NYC
Friday, October 22:
10:00am-5:00pm: Live broadcast and performances hosted by KEXP at the Ace Hotel Lobby featuring Glasser, Devotchka, Colin Meloy, Cults and The Extra Lens (Mountain Goats and Franklin Bruno) (free and open to the public)
10:15am to 8pm: @EVR Streaming Showcase at East Village Radio, 19 1st Avenue, NYC. Live broadcast of performances, interviews, and DJ sets by Home Video, Lights On Moscow, “1, 2, 3”, Sailor Jerry (takeover special with programming curated by Sailor Jerry), Ivri Lider, and The Aikiu.
11:00am-12:15pm: “There’s More Than Radio, Build Your Audience Online” (Panel discussion at NYU featuring KEXP Program Director/Show Host and others)
12:00noon-7:00pm: “Manifest Airwaves” showcase at Bruar Falls in Brooklyn presented by KXSC, KVRX, CHUO and LA Record. This free show (an “unofficial” CMJ event) was put together entirely by three college radio stations and will include performances by Computer Magic, Coolrunnings, Waking Lights, White Arrows, The Eastern Sea, Superhumanoids, No Joy, Magic Bullets, and Free Moral Agents (Ikey from the Mars Volta).
12:30-1:45pm: CMJ Mentor Sessions: College Radio (held at NYU, open to CMJ badge holders who register in advance during College Day)
7:00-10:00pm: WFMU Record Fair at the Metropolitan Pavilion, 125 West 18th Street, NYC. This huge record sale benefits community radio station WFMU and will feature live DJ sets, live broadcasts, performances, and films. Full schedule of events available here.
