We reported on a bunch of college radio news throughout the week, including the College Broadcasters Inc. (CBI) settlement with SoundExchange over royalty rates and reporting requirements for college radio stations that webcast. After digging into the SoundExchange-CBI Joint Motion, I have a few more details to report on this agreement for 2016-2020. (more…)

College Radio Watch – KFJC in Liverpool, WXDR History, Spotify’s Musical Colleges, and More College Radio News
As I write this post, I’m glued to the live stream of Foothill College radio station KFJC-FM, awaiting the beginning of its broadcast from the Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia. As I wrote earlier this morning and also explained to College Media Matters, KFJC (the station where I’ve been a long-time DJ and volunteer) is […]
College Radio Survivor: More LPFM Stations, Philly College Radio Tour, and More College Radio News
In a piece for Online Athens, Eddie DePeterse writes about the powerful allure of radio, praising it as one of the few remaining mediums that is FREE. He talks about listening to strange stations as a kid, saying, “Radio was a portal to me, a channel for life’s mysteries.” Today, he listens to college radio […]
College Radio Watch: Will College Radio Make You Cool?, LPFM Action, and More News
I was amused reading The Noisey Guide to Being Cool in College, as college radio gets a mention. Although the piece warns against revealing experimental music taste too soon (you might be seen as a hipster) in order to create a better first impression on campus, it does recommend getting a college radio show. While […]
College Radio Watch: Another Radio K Birthday, College Radio Day Updates, Public Radio Partnerships, and More News
It’s hard to believe that it’s September already and that the fall semester is now well underway on most college campuses. Student radio stations are recruiting new members, hosting events, and preparing for several fall college radio conferences, including CBI’s convention in Seattle and CMJ’s Music Marathon in New York City (both are in late […]
College Radio Watch: Music Director Manual, WSCS License Sold, CBI Awards, Boston Radio Tours, and a New LPFM
It’s a new school year on many college campuses, so many college radio stations are in active recruitment mode as they invite students to join their stations. The Orange County Register notes that Chapman College radio station Chapman Radio is the biggest student organization on campus, with 250-275 student DJs. CMJ posted an interview with […]
College Radio Watch: Indiana State’s NPR Plans, WDBK Still for Sale, Fines for Two Stations and a New LPFM
I’m now back from my summer hiatus and although I wasn’t glued to my computer penning College Radio Watch for the past couple of weeks, it doesn’t mean that I wasn’t still living and breathing college radio. While vacationing on the East Coast, I visited five college radio stations in the Boston area. (more…)
College Radio Watch: WSJ Reports on “Shift” in College Radio as Evidenced by WRAS Situation
This week the Wall Street Journal ran a piece about recent changes at Georgia State University’s college radio station WRAS-FM. As we’ve been reporting, the student-run station in Atlanta, Georgia was recently told that administrators had made a secret deal with Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB). As part of that arrangement, student voices are now only […]
College Radio Watch: WSCS to be Sold, WRAS Responds to GPB Letter, Troubles at KCPR?
Although it’s the dead of summer, there’s definitely lots going on in the world of college radio. With students mostly on summer break, sadly, much of the news isn’t so great. As we’ve seen time and time again, often big announcements from administrators occur either right before or during summer and winter breaks. In keeping […]
College Radio Watch: Protests over Future of WRAS Continue, With WABE Critiquing the Deal as Well
As I composed this post, supporters of student radio programming on WRAS-FM were assembling at a protest at Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB) headquarters in Atlanta. The peaceful protest by SaveWRAS supporters is part of a larger effort to spread the word about changes at the Georgia State University radio station in order to either stop […]
