I continue to be impressed by the number of colleges and universities who applied for new LPFM radio licenses in the fall 2013 window. As I wrote in LPFM Watch yesterday, in the past few weeks a handful of college radio stations were granted construction permits for new LPFMs. By my count, this brings the […]

FCC turns down proposed college radio underwriting “experiment” yet again
The Maricopa Community College district’s latest appeal to the Federal Communications Commission to let it walk around some of the agency’s restrictions on underwriting spots has been turned down. Maricopa of Arizona runs jazz station KJZZ-FM and classical signal KBAQ-FM. Citing money troubles, it has been pressing the FCC for a waiver to expand the […]
College Radio Watch: Why I Tour College Radio Stations
I’ve written up 68 radio station tours since 2008 and have probably visited close to 100 stations total. Nearly 50 of those visits were to college radio stations all over the country (plus a few in Ireland). My goal has always been to spread the gospel of college radio to not only the masses, but […]
Touring College Radio Station WLOY at Loyola University Maryland
My final radio station visit during my trip to the D.C. area in April, 2014 was to see WLOY at Loyola University Maryland. As the end of the year approaches, I’m already starting to think about what the overarching themes of 2014 were for college radio. Like many recent years, it’s been a mix of good and bad news this year. The situation at Georgia State University’s WRAS-FM is a high profile example of public radio’s ongoing interest […]
Wellesley College Radio Station WZLY Says it Will Sell its FM License
Last December I reported that students at Wellesley College radio station WZLY 91.5 FM were concerned about forthcoming changes to the station related to campus construction and a reduction in space. Well, now we are hearing that students may be giving up the WZLY 7 watt class D FM radio license. (more…)

The FCC has issued a Notice of Apparent Liability for Forfeiture to American International College in Springfield, Massachusetts for late renewal and public file violations at WAIC-FM. Additionally, the license renewal term was shortened in response to the violations. As of October, 2011, WAIC-FM has been airing public radio content from WNPR/Connecticut Pubic Radio, but […]
